President Trump said, "I will not run for Vice President in 2028.", Remains silent on third term
Donald Trump ruled out running for Vice President in 2028 but stayed vague on a third term, reigniting debates over the 22nd Amendment and succession laws.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he will not run for Vice President in the 2028 election. However, he did not clarify whether he would seek a third term. This statement has once again sparked discussions about the possibility of extending his term.
Constitutional Bar on Third Term
According to the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, no person can become President more than twice. Some supporters have suggested a way around this bar—such as Trump running as Vice President and then assuming the office upon the President's resignation. However, constitutional experts say this is also closed. The 12th Amendment clearly states that a person who is not eligible to become President cannot also become Vice President.
Trump said, "It would be very clever, people would not like it." Speaking to reporters on Air Force One while en route from Malaysia to Tokyo, Trump said, "I would be allowed to do it, but I will not do it." It would be too clever. I don't think people would like it. It wouldn't be right." Trump also stated that he considers the idea too clever and unfair.
Open stance on the possibility of a third term
Regarding the question of a third term, Trump said, "I would love it. My numbers are the best ever." When asked if he was explicitly stating that he would not run for a third term, he replied, "Am I saying no? You'll have to tell me that." When asked if he would fight the issue in court, he said, "I haven't thought about it yet."
Discussing both age and enthusiasm
Trump is currently 79 years old. If he runs in 2028, he will be 82, making him the oldest president in US history. Nevertheless, he stated that he remains energetic and constantly engages with the public and the media. It's worth noting that during the 2024 election campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized Joe Biden's age and agility, saying he was too old to lead.
Potential Republican Leaders for 2028 - Vance and Rubio
Trump praised his Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying, "They're both great people. If they ever get together, they'll be unstoppable." Rubio responded with a smile and a nod.
