Ujjain's astrologer had found the auspicious time for independence, Do you know this story of choosing 15th August?
15th August 1947 marked India’s freedom from British rule, but did you know astrology also shaped this historic date? Ujjain’s renowned astrologer Pandit Suryanarayan Vyas calculated the auspicious Muhurta for independence, influencing Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s decision. Discover the untold story of how astrology played a key role in choosing India’s Independence Day.

15th August 1947… that historic day when India broke the shackles of British rule and breathed the air of freedom. But do you know that behind choosing this day there were not only political decisions but also astrological calculations had a deep contribution? Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh, which has been the center of astrology and astronomy since ancient times, played an important role in finding the auspicious time for India's independence. Ujjain's famous astrologer Pandit Suryanarayan Vyas had found the auspicious time for the date of independence.
Question of the date of independence
By the end of 1946 it was clear that the British were going to leave India. Jawaharlal Nehru was going to become the Prime Minister and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was going to become the President. But not only international equations but also astrological calculations were involved in deciding the date of independence. The British gave two options for independence - 14th August or 15th August. From here begins the interesting story, where Dr. Rajendra Prasad took the advice of astrology, because he was a person with deep religious thoughts.
Astrologer called from Ujjain
Dr. Rajendra Prasad called Padma Bhushan Pandit Suryanarayan Vyas of Ujjain to Delhi through his trusted Goswami Ganesh Dutt Maharaj. Vyas was a revolutionary, writer and a great scholar of astrology. The President asked him - which of these two dates would be auspicious for India's independence? Vyas ji opened the Panchang, calculated the planets and constellations and gave the decision.
Why was 15 August chosen?
Vyas told that the Lagna in the horoscope of 14 August is unstable, which is not good for the future of the country. At the same time, the Muhurta of midnight of 15 August (midnight of 14 and 15) has a stable Lagna, which will strengthen democracy. Dr. Rajendra Prasad approved this advice and at exactly 12 o'clock in the night, after purifying the Parliament, independence was declared. The interesting thing is that some astrologers had called 15 August inauspicious, but Vyas ji's calculation changed history. While Pakistan shifted its independence to 14 August, India's date remained fixed on Vyas ji's Muhurta.
That tradition is still alive
This story is not just in history books, but is still alive in Ujjain. There, Independence Day is celebrated according to the date in Bada Ganesh Mandir - just like it was Shravan Krishna Chaturdashi in 1947, similarly this festival is celebrated every year.
Who was Pandit Suryanarayan Vyas
Pandit Suryanarayan Vyas was a famous astrologer of Ujjain. He had also taken an active part in the freedom struggle. He was famous for his unique art of writing with both hands simultaneously and accurate predictions. In 1930, he had predicted that India would be free in 1947 and Dr. Rajendra Prasad would become the first President of the country, which later proved to be true. Big leaders of the country trusted his astrological calculations.
