Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs

The Ministry of External Affairs stated, "We have been closely monitoring developments in Nepal since yesterday. We are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives in the violence that erupted during the protests. Our condolences and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery. As a close friend and neighbor, we hope that all concerned parties will exercise restraint and resolve any issues through peaceful means and dialogue. We have also noted that authorities have imposed a curfew in Kathmandu and several other cities in Nepal. Indian citizens in Nepal are advised to exercise caution and follow the measures and guidelines issued by the Nepalese authorities."

Embassy releases numbers

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has released emergency numbers for all Indian citizens in Nepal. The embassy said that in case of any emergency or need of assistance, they can contact on: +977- 980 860 2881, +977- 981 032 6134.

Most of the protesters are students

Most of the students in the anti-government protest were school-college students, who were in uniform. They had banners and posters with slogans written on them along with the national flag. It was written on them, Stop corruption, not social media. Remove the ban on social media and youth against corruption.

India tightened security on Bengal and Sikkim border
The impact of the uproar caused by the student-youth movements in neighboring country Nepal is also visible on the India-Nepal border. In view of the fierce protests and violence going on in Nepal, India has increased vigilance on most of the borders with West Bengal. The Center and the states have issued a high alert regarding security.

According to the information, the approximately 1,751 km long open border of India-Nepal is connected to five states - Uttarakhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal. It includes about 100 km of West Bengal and about 90 km of Sikkim. In view of the current situation, security has been increased on the borders of these states. Every suspicious activity is being closely monitored.

A senior Darjeeling police officer said that an intensive search operation is going on at the border. Vigilance has been increased. We are in constant touch with Nepal Police. The situation on the Indian border is calm right now, but we are fully alert. At the same time, a senior SSB officer said, there is no apprehension in the border areas. We are keeping an eye on the situation and hope that the situation in Nepal will be normal soon.

What is the whole matter, where did the anger arise from?

Let us tell you that thousands of youth demonstrated on the streets of Kathmandu against the ban on social media. The protesters were also seen trying to move towards the Parliament House. The police had to use water cannon, batons and rubber bullets to control the situation. Posters with slogans like 'Stop corruption, not social media', 'Unblock social media' were also seen in the hands of the protesters.

It is worth noting that in recent years, many reports of alleged corruption related to ministers and officials in PM Oli's government have surfaced. After these reports, anger is brewing among the public. After seeing the deepening crisis in the country after the reports of deaths in violence and injured protesters, the United Nations Human Rights Office also expressed concern. The UN has demanded a fair and transparent investigation.
