Election process begins for the new Vice President of the country, Know what are the main activities of the election program
After Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation citing health issues, the Election Commission has initiated the process for electing a new Vice President of India. The election will be conducted under Article 324 and relevant laws, ensuring transparency and fairness. President Murmu accepted the resignation, while PM Modi extended good wishes.

After the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the election process for the post of Vice President has now formally started. The Union Home Ministry notified Dhankhar's resignation through its gazette issued on July 22. Under Article 324 of the Constitution, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has the right to conduct elections for the post of Vice President. This election is conducted under the "President and Vice President Election Act, 1952" and "President and Vice President Election Rules, 1974". The Election Commission has started preparations for the election of the new Vice President. The election program will be announced soon as the preliminary preparations are completed.
Main activities before the announcement of the election program
-Preparation of the electoral college, which includes elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
-Chief Electoral Officer and Assistant Electoral Officers are appointed.
-Background information of all the Vice Presidential elections held so far is compiled and publicized.
-The Election Commission has clarified that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure fair, free and transparent elections for the post of Vice President.
Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation accepted
President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday accepted Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation from the post of Vice President. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Dhankhar good health. Prime Minister Modi wrote on social media platform X, "Jagdeep Dhankhar ji has had the opportunity to serve the country in many roles including the Vice President of India. I wish him good health."
Resigned with immediate effect giving priority to health
India's 14th Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday resigned from the post of Vice President citing health concerns. In a letter to President Draupadi Murmu, he said that he is leaving the post with immediate effect giving priority to health. On July 16, 2022, the BJP declared Dhankhar as the NDA's candidate for the post of Vice President. In the elections held on August 6, 2022, he defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin.
