Discussion begins in the ruling camp for the new Vice President

The sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has started a round of discussions in the ruling camp for his successor. The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a majority in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha electoral college. In the coming days, the NDA will consider potential candidates.

Dhankhar has previously been the Governor of West Bengal. It is possible that the NDA may choose another governor, an experienced organizational leader or one of the Union ministers for this post. Dhankhar's predecessor M. Venkaiah Naidu was the former president of the BJP and a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government. He was elected to this constitutional post in 2017. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is a Janata Dal (United) MP and has been in this post since 2020. He is also being considered a potential candidate, as he enjoys the confidence of the government.
