Big step after 5 years, India opened doors for Chinese citizens, know full details
In a major step towards normalizing ties, India will resume visa services for Chinese citizens from July 24, 2025—five years after suspension due to COVID-19 and Galwan clashes. The Indian Embassy in Beijing confirmed the move, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Taking an important decision, the Government of India has finally opened its doors to Chinese citizens once again after five years. The Government of India has decided to start the process of granting visas to Chinese citizens, the good thing is that the government has decided to start this process in the last week of this month. The Indian Embassy in Beijing informed about this decision on Wednesday, which is considered to be the beginning of a new chapter in the relations between the two countries.
When will the process start?
According to media reports, this process will come into effect from 24 July 2025. In March 2020, India temporarily suspended all tourist visas to prevent the spread of the Kovid-19 epidemic. Since then the visa service for Chinese citizens was closed, which had a great impact on the movement of people between the two countries. The embassy has also clarified that a duly issued 'passport withdrawal letter' will be mandatory while applying for passport return at the Indian Visa Center in Beijing. This step has been taken to streamline the process.
Situation improved after Galwan
The Covid-19 pandemic as well as the violent clashes between India and China in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 had a great impact on the relations between the two countries. During that time travel and mutual contact had almost come to a standstill. After the Galwan Valley incident, the relations between the two countries reached the worst state since the 1962 war.
Campaign to bring relations back on track
However, the situation has improved for some time. Through several rounds of diplomatic and military talks, troops withdrew from several tense areas like Pangong Lake, Galwan and Hot Springs. In October 2024, an agreement was also reached to withdraw troops from the Depsang and Demchok areas. A few days later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, Russia, in which many important decisions were taken to bring bilateral relations back on track.
