Union Home Minister Amit Shah has become the longest serving Union Home Minister in the history of India. Amit Shah has made this record by leaving behind senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani. Amit Shah took over the responsibility of the Home Minister of the country on 30 May 2019. Rajnath Singh was made the Home Minister in the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After the BJP won a record victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Amit Shah was made the Home Minister in the second term of Prime Minister Modi and he is currently also serving in this post. On 10 June 2024, Amit Shah took oath as Home Minister for the second time.

Lal Krishna Advani held the record

At present, Amit Shah has completed 2,258 days (from 30 May 2019 to 5 August 2025) as Home Minister. Earlier, the record of being the longest serving Home Minister was in the name of Lal Krishna Advani. He served in this post for 2,256 days (from 19 March 1998 to 22 May 2004). Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of the country then.

The leaders with the longest tenure as Home Minister also include Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant, who served in this post for a total of 6 years and 56 days from 10 January 1955 to 7 March 1961. India's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel served as Home Minister for 1,218 days (15 August 1947 to 12 December 1950).

The tenure of Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been full of bold and historic decisions so far. During his tenure, steps were taken towards strict action on terrorism and strengthening internal security. The historic decisions include the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the country, new criminal justice law, besides several important operations to eradicate left wing extremism and Naxalism.
