The Trump administration's order states that India is directly or indirectly importing oil from Russia, which America considers a threat to its national security and foreign policy.

India's response to US tariffs

India's Foreign Ministry has also issued a statement on US tariffs. Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, clearly said that the US has targeted India's oil imports from Russia in recent times. We have already made our position clear on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and are done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of India's 1.4 billion people.

He said that it is extremely unfortunate that the US has chosen to impose additional duties on India for the work that many other countries are also doing in their national interest.
