Social Media Banned in Nepal

Taking major action on social media in India's neighboring country Nepal, the government has banned X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Instagram. This step has been taken after the order of the Supreme Court, in which the main reason is the ignorance of the instructions and 'non-compliance' by these platforms.

The Nepal government announced on Thursday (September 4) that it is banning most social media platforms for not following the local rules required to officially register in the country. Under this new order, 26 platforms including major services like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and YouTube will be banned.

Notice was sent several times

Nepal's Communications and Information Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung said that the government had sent notices several times to about two dozen most used social media platforms in the country asking them to register their company in Nepal. But, they did not do so. For this reason, these platforms will now be blocked immediately.

However, the minister also clarified that five platforms including TikTok and Viber will continue to run in Nepal as they have complied with the government's registration rules.

Why was the ban imposed?

On August 28, the government had given a seven-day deadline to all major social media platforms to register their company in Nepal and appoint a local representative or contact person. But many companies did not do so till the deadline ended. Meanwhile, a new law bill has been introduced in the Parliament of Nepal, which aims to make social media platforms accountable, responsible and better managed.

Apart from this, the Supreme Court of Nepal had also recently ruled that all online and social media platforms, whether domestic or foreign, must compulsorily register with the concerned authority. On the basis of this decision, the government took the step of ban.
