Anuppur, The incident of chlorine gas leak from the soda caustic unit located in Bargawan Amalai, Nagar Parishad, Anuppur district has not only highlighted the issue of industrial safety, but also brought to the fore the indifference of the management and administration towards the safety and health of the local residents. The leakage of chlorine gas, which is an extremely dangerous and lethal gas, directly endangers the lives of people. Expressing this view, thinker Chaitanya Mishra further said that this is not the first time that gas has leaked from this unit; it has become one of the regular incidents, which should be taken seriously. Chlorine is a poisonous gas, and exposure to it can cause serious problems like difficulty in breathing, eye irritation, and skin irritation. Its long-term effects can be fatal to health. On 21 September 2024, at around 7:30 pm, there was a sudden gas leak, which caused a stampede among the population of Ward No. 03 of the council. Tears started flowing from the eyes of the people, and they started having difficulty in breathing. This incident was extremely dangerous and its effect remained on the ground surface for several hours. The most worrying thing is that this is not a one-time incident, but gas leaks from this unit keep happening once in a month or two. It is clear from this that there is serious negligence in safety management in the factory. The local residents of Bargawan Amalai Nagar Parishad, who live in Ward No. 1, 2 and 3 around the factory, are forced to live amidst such dangers. And every time they get upset with this leak, but no concrete steps are being taken by the industry administration to stop it. The silence and negligence of the industry officials is reprehensible, which clearly shows that they are ignoring the safety and health of the local residents. The biggest problem is that the factory does not have any proper health system. There are neither doctors nor medicines in the health center of the soda factory. If a major accident occurs, it is not possible to provide treatment and first aid. In such a situation, it is the responsibility of the factory management and administration to pay attention to this and improve health facilities so that lives of people can be saved in any emergency situation. Such incidents remind us of the horrors of the Bhopal gas tragedy, when thousands of people lost their lives due to the negligence of the management and the indifference of the administration. This incident in Anuppur is also pointing towards a big danger. If no concrete action is taken in time, the situation here too can go out of control. To avoid such industrial accidents, it is necessary that the factory management and administration together take concrete safety measures. Allowing incidents of leakage of dangerous gases like chlorine gas to happen repeatedly is not only negligence but also a serious crime. The local administration and the industry department should pay attention to this and conduct regular inspections and take strict action against the guilty officials. Along with this, health facilities should also be improved so that in case of any emergency, local residents can get immediate medical help. Chlorine gas leak is not just an industrial accident, it is a symbol of negligence towards human life, which cannot be ignored under any circumstances. If the administration and management do not wake up in time, then this soda factory of Anuppur can become the center of the next big industrial tragedy.
