New Delhi, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Afzal Ansari has been disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha. Two days ago, on April 29, the BSP MP from Ghazipur Afzal Ansari was sentenced to 4 years in a case by the court. Afzal is the second leader to lose his Lok Sabha membership during the last few weeks. Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has lost his Lok Sabha membership after being convicted by a court in Surat for making a statement containing 'Modi surname'.

Ever since Afzal Ansari was sentenced, it was believed that his parliament membership could go anytime. The Representation of the People Act states that in a criminal case, any person convicted of a sentence of two years or more shall be disqualified 'from the date of such sentence' and the disqualification shall continue for six years after the time served in jail.

A court in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district sentenced BSP MP Afzal Ansari to four years imprisonment and a fine of Rs one lakh in a 14-year-old Gangster Act case, while Afzal's younger brother and former gangster-turned-politician MLA Mukhtar Ansari was imprisoned for 10 years and fined Rs 5 lakh.

Additional Sessions Judge (First) Durgesh of Ghazipur's Special MP-MLA court had given his verdict in the case. On November 22, 2007, a case under the Gangster Act was filed at Mohammadabad Kotwali in Ghazipur district, including MPs Afzal Ansari and Mukhtar Ansari in the gangster chart. On September 23, 2022, charges were framed against both and the prosecution evidence was completed.
