After the international news agency Reuters' X (formerly Twitter) account was blocked in India, the government has clarified that it has not given any such legal instructions. The official spokesperson of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a statement on Sunday to clarify.

The statement said, "There was no need for the Indian government to block Reuters' handle. We are continuously working with X (Twitter) to resolve this issue." It is worth noting that on Sunday, the message started appearing on Reuters' X handle that, "This account has been withheld in India in response to a legal request."

Was the old order implemented by mistake?

After this, PTI reported quoting government sources that an order was issued on May 7 during Operation Sindoor, but it was not implemented. Now X has probably implemented that old order by mistake. Government sources say they have immediately contacted X and asked it to remove the block.

It is worth noting that while handles like Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Asia and Reuters China are still active in India, the main Reuters account and Reuters World handle are blocked in India. According to X, this “withheld” message is shown in cases when content has to be restricted under “the law of any country or the order of the court”.
