Child Labor Prohibition Day 2024
When and how did the celebration of World Child Labor Prohibition Day start?
World Child Labor Prohibition Day is celebrated every year on 12 June. Its goal is to give momentum to the growing global movement against child labor. The United Nations believes that if people and governments focus on the root cause and recognize the interrelationship between social justice and child labor, child labor can be eliminated.
Child labor is a serious issue. Childhood is a time to play and learn, not to work in dangerous conditions. Child labor inhibits the physical and mental development of children and also deprives them of the opportunity for education.
World Child Labor Prohibition Day 2024: Theme
The International Labor Organization (ILO) chooses a theme for World Child Labor Prohibition Day every year. The theme of World Child Labor Prohibition Day 2024 is – “Let’s Act on Our Commitments: End Child Labour! (Let’s act on our commitments: end child labor!).” This year's World Day will mark the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Worst Forms of Child Labor.
History of World Day Against Child Labor
The International Labor Union (ILO) first raised the issue of preventing child labor, after which in 2002 a law was unanimously passed under which making children under the age of 14 work was considered a crime. The International Labor Union (ILO) has 187 member countries. The ILO has passed several conventions to improve labor conditions in the world. Moreover, it also keeps giving necessary guidelines on matters like wages, working hours, favorable environment, etc. In 1973, people's attention was focused on the minimum age for employment by adopting ILO Convention No. 138. The purpose of which was to force member states to increase the minimum age of employment and eliminate child labor.
Importance of World Day Against Child Labor
Poverty is the biggest reason for child labor, due to which children leave the option of education and choose to work under compulsion. Apart from this, many children are also forced into child labor by organized crime rackets. So the purpose of celebrating this day globally is to draw people's attention to these things, so that children can be prevented from child labor.
