Virat Kohli had made this big demand from BCCI
When the board refused, he made up his mind to retire from Tests
After Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli has also told the BCCI that he also wants to retire from Test cricket. According to media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India wants Kohli to be a part of the Indian team during the Test series against England, but the ball is now in Kohli's court. Kohli has not yet responded to the BCCI's request to reconsider his decision.
A BCCI source said about this that the board has requested Kohli to take some time before taking a decision on retirement. NDTV quoted a BCCI official as saying that he is still fully fit and hungry for runs. His presence in the dressing room boosts the morale of the entire team. We have requested him to take some time before taking a final decision.
Kohli had demanded captaincy
Amidst all this, a Times of India report revealed that Virat Kohli had requested the BCCI for Test captaincy. However, the board rejected it as they now want a young player to captain the team. It is believed that Shubman Gill can be made the next Test captain. The new cycle of the World Test Championship is starting. As far as the team is concerned, its future is now being kept in mind. Coach Gautam Gambhir also wants a team of players with whom he can work for a long time. India has lost the last two important Test series.
The TOI report further stated that Kohli told his teammates several times during the Australia tour that now is the time to retire from Test cricket. Kohli's performance in Australia was poor and he scored only 190 runs including a century in five Tests. The report has not confirmed whether a decline in form or the BCCI's refusal to hand over the Test captaincy was the reason behind his decision.
