Relief to former Pakistan PM Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi
Islamabad High Court suspended the sentence
On January 31, the accountability court had sentenced both of them to 14-14 years in jail for alleged corruption in government gifts received from Toshakhana, a few days before the general elections in the country. Both of them had challenged the sentence in Islamabad High Court. A two-member bench led by Chief Justice Aamir Farooq heard the case. After the hearing on Monday, the court suspended the couple's sentence in the case. The court also gave him temporary relief by granting him bail. However, the court said that the appeal for quashing the sentence and acquittal will be heard after the Eid holidays.
Imran-Bushra may still remain in jail
It is believed that Imran Khan will have to remain in jail for now. This is because he has been convicted in other cases also. In such a situation, they cannot be released until they are acquitted of the charges. Similarly, Bushra has also been convicted in another case.
What is the matter?
In the Toshakhana case, Imran is accused of keeping expensive government gifts received during his tenure as Prime Minister of Pakistan. Actually, under the rules related to Toshakhana, government officials can keep the gift after paying the price, but before that the gift should be deposited in Toshakhana. Imran and Bushra are accused of either not depositing the gifts or allegedly using their power to keep it for themselves by paying a low price.
Punishment has been done in these cases
Imran Khan was convicted in the Toshakhana case on January 30, a day after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Cypher case. Earlier, he was also convicted in a separate Toshakhana case in August 2023, due to which he was arrested. Imran has so far been convicted in four different cases since losing power in April 2022. He has got bail in both the Toshakhana cases.
