Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested from Manila International Airport on Tuesday. This action was taken on the orders of the International Criminal Court. In fact, the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant against Duterte for crimes against humanity. Duterte arrived in the Philippines capital Manila from Hong Kong on Tuesday, where he was taken into custody at the airport itself.

These allegations are on the former president

Duterte is accused that during his tenure as mayor, action was taken against the drug trade, in which people were killed on a large scale. The International Criminal Court started an investigation against Duterte on 1 November 2011. At that time Duterte was the mayor of Davao city in the Philippines. The ICC investigation lasted till 16 March 2019. During Duterte's presidential tenure, an attempt was made to cancel the ICC investigation. However, the ICC rejected Duterte's demand. Duterte will step down from power in the Philippines in 2022.
Duterte's administration had proposed to suspend the global court's investigation at the end of 2021. The administration had argued that their country's authorities were already investigating the allegations. Duterte's administration had said that this matter does not fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. However, in July 2023, the court rejected the objection of the Duterte administration and ruled that the investigation could resume.
