Flood like situation due to heavy rain in Dubai
Water entered houses including airport-metro stations
Dubai: United Arab Emirates, which is known for drought and desert all over the world, what happened suddenly that the entire country got hit by torrential rains and severe floods?... After all, how did the desert plains of Dubai become just a few places? Within hours the oceans turned into rivers and the roads turned into raging rivers? There is no place left where rain and flood have not shown their influence in Dubai. In every city and every street, wherever you look there is water. This is the worst rain in Dubai in 75 years. Cars are floating on the roads and parks, people's houses are flooded, airports are half submerged, rivers are flowing on the roads, water has entered malls and markets. Schools, colleges, offices all have been closed. But what is the reason for this record rain in Dubai?
The whole world wants to know what is the real reason behind the 'heaviest rain in 75 years' in UAE. How Dubai airports suddenly panicked, where hundreds of flights were landing and taking off every day. According to meteorologists, more than 14 cm of rain has been seen in UAE in just one day. This much rainfall has never happened before in 75 years. Torrential rains have flooded highways and homes, schools are closed and people have been asked to work from home. Flights have been stopped.
Is cloud seeding the biggest reason for floods in Dubai?
Cloud seeding is a process of creating artificial rain. In this, as per scientific process, small planes are passed through the clouds. These aircraft are equipped with silver iodide, dry ice and chloride. Planes keep releasing it among the clouds, due to this, water droplets start freezing in the clouds and then start falling on the ground in the form of rain. This is called cloud seeding. With this, many times more rain can be produced than natural rain. This technology is being used in more than 50 countries of the world. It has been tested in India also. China, Australia, America, Russia and Japan are at the forefront among the countries providing artificial rain. In 2022, UAE had caused so much rain through cloud seeding that it created flood situations. Now for the second time the issue of cloud seeding by Dubai is coming to light.
Cloud seeding in Dubai mentioned in many reports
In many reports, cloud seeding is being cited as the reason behind the terrible floods in Dubai. Fujairah, on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, recorded 14.5 cm (5.7 inches) of rain on Tuesday. Several reports have linked the flash floods in Dubai to "cloud seeding". The UAE government flew small planes burning special salt flames through the clouds, the report said. Due to this the rainfall increased. Quoting meteorologists from the National Meteorological Centre, many claimed to have flown six or seven cloud seeding flights before the rains.
Dubai's flight-tracking data is also pointing in the same direction. A plane linked to the UAE's cloud seeding efforts flew amid clouds across the country on Sunday, data analysis showed. Let us tell you that UAE does cloud seeding to increase its depleting, limited groundwater. It also relies heavily on energy-consuming desalination plants for water.
Fear over climate change
No official statement has come from Dubai regarding cloud seeding. Meanwhile, Sky News weather producer Chris England said he was skeptical of cloud seeding causing rain in Dubai because there was "very little" evidence of it. He said "Some studies have indicated that climate change may have increased rainfall in the region." He said that "flash floods occur in the UAE during the winter half of the year". However "the current flooding is unusual for built-up areas of Dubai". Chris said, “April 16 could be the wettest day on record.
Hail also fell after the rain
Rain in Dubai started late on Monday night and continued throughout the day before intensifying on Tuesday morning, bringing more rain to the city. Then hail also fell. Such torrential rains are an unusual occurrence in the United Arab Emirates, an arid country on the Arabian Peninsula, but do occur from time to time during the cold winter months. The state-run WAM news agency said the heavy rains were "a historic weather event", exceeding records that began in 1949. As a result, water accumulated on the taxiway as soon as the plane landed at the airport.
Due to this, the arrival of ships and taxis was stopped on Tuesday night, while the passengers struggled to reach the terminal amid flood waters on the surrounding roads. Dubai International Airport said on Wednesday morning that flooding had left "transportation options limited" and "recovery will take some time". This affected flights as aircrews could not reach the airfield and the city's driverless metro stations were flooded as the water caused disruption.
