The responsibility of building consensus on the post of Speaker of Lok Sabha has been entrusted to senior BJP leader and Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. On Tuesday, an important meeting of BJP and alliance leaders was held at the Defense Minister's house regarding the candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. In this, there was brainstorming on the post of Speaker. The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is to begin from June 24. During this time, new members of the Lok Sabha will take oath and then the new Speaker of the Lok Sabha will be elected on June 26.
Sources are telling that BJP has also sought suggestions from allies. It is also being said that the allies have left the decision to the BJP itself. It will decide about this. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Bhupendra Yadav, Manohar Lal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Kiren Rijiju, S Jaishankar, Virendra Kumar and Annapurna Devi attended the meeting held at the Defense Minister's house. Some leaders of NDA constituent parties including JDU's Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Singh and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas)'s Chirag Paswan were also present in this meeting. Om Birla can be the Speaker of Lok Sabha again: Many names are being discussed for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. There is also talk of Om Birla becoming the Speaker of Lok Sabha again. Om Birla has won from Kota Lok Sabha constituency in Rajasthan. The names of D Purandeswari, Radha Mohan Singh and Bhartrihari Mahtab are also being discussed for the post of Speaker. BJP's national vice-president and former Union minister Radha Mohan Singh, who hails from Bihar, has been elected MP for the seventh time. D Purandeswari is the head of the BJP state unit in Andhra Pradesh and is the daughter of former Chief Minister and actor NT Rama Rao (NTR). She is also a relative of TDP chief and CM Chandrababu Naidu. In such a situation, if BJP chooses her name, then TDP will also have no objection. Purandeshwari was earlier in the Congress, but in the year 2014 she joined the BJP. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she has been elected MP from Rajmundri. Bhartruhari Mahtab is a leader of Odisha BJP. Earlier he was associated with Biju Janata Dal for a long time. This time BJP has performed brilliantly in the Lok Sabha elections as well as the assembly elections in Odisha and BJP has formed the government in the state for the first time. In such a situation, Odisha may get preference in the election of the Speaker. Congress MP K. Suresh has been made the Protem Speaker. The newly elected MPs for the 18th Lok Sabha will be sworn in for the first two days. The Protem Speaker has been appointed for the oath.
The opposition can also field candidates:
This time BJP has not been able to achieve the magic figure of 272 seats on its own. It has had to take the support of Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and JDU. In such a situation, before any decision, BJP is also discussing with its allies. In 2014 and 2019, BJP elected the Lok Sabha Speaker on its own will. It is not yet clear whether the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A. will also field a candidate for the Speaker. Till now the tradition has been that the Speaker is elected unanimously. The opposition demands that it should get the post of Deputy Speaker, but BJP wants to give the post of Deputy Speaker to its ally.
