When will heavy rain lash UP, Bihar, and Delhi?
Latest IMD update on the monsoon
New Delhi, As people across the country await relief from the heat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh update regarding the Southwest Monsoon 2026. As of today, June 19, 2026, the monsoon is steadily advancing and is expected to reach parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh soon. According to the IMD, the northern limit of the monsoon is currently passing through Muzaffarpur, Jamui, Ranchi, Phulbani, Hyderabad, Solapur, and Harnai. Given the weather conditions, the monsoon is likely to advance further into additional areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh around June 23.
What is the monsoon status in Bihar?
The monsoon has now reached Bihar's doorstep. According to the latest IMD update, the monsoon is likely to make its entry into several parts of the state over the next few days. The northern limit of the monsoon has already reached the vicinity of Muzaffarpur and Jamui, indicating that a spell of rain could soon begin across a large part of the state. Cloud cover is expected to increase in several districts, including Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, and Muzaffarpur. Good rainfall may be witnessed in many areas around June 23; this will bring relief to farmers and accelerate preparations for paddy cultivation.
When will the monsoon reach UP?
The monsoon is currently some distance away from the Uttar Pradesh border, but given its pace, it is expected to arrive in Eastern Uttar Pradesh soon. The normal arrival time for the monsoon is also considered to be around the last week of June. Rainfall activity is likely to pick up first in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Ballia, Deoria, and surrounding eastern districts. Subsequently, the monsoon will gradually move towards central and western UP. According to the Meteorological Department's forecast, a spell of rain could begin across a large part of the state between the last week of June and the beginning of July.
When will heavy rain lash Delhi? Residents of the national capital, Delhi, are currently grappling with heat and humidity. According to the map, the monsoon is currently positioned well to the south and east of Delhi. Typically, the monsoon arrives in Delhi either in late June or the first week of July. If the current pace of the monsoon is maintained, weather conditions in Delhi-NCR could begin to change towards the end of June. Consequently, the Meteorological Department forecasts that the monsoon could reach the capital by June 27, with the possibility of good rainfall during the first week of July.
What does the map indicate?
According to the IMD’s "Advance of Southwest Monsoon 2026" map, the monsoon has already covered parts of South, Northeast, and East India. Blue lines depict the actual progression of the monsoon, while red lines indicate projected dates. The map clearly shows the monsoon advancing at a normal pace across East India and poised to move towards North India. However, reports indicate that the monsoon's momentum has slowed significantly this year, resulting in a delay in its advance. Rainfall across India has been recorded as below normal for the period leading up to June 18.
