Police reached the spot and a case was registered. When the police interrogated the suspect Sudama during the investigation by the police, he conspired with his friend Babulal and his brother-in-law Dharmendra, Ramgopal Sahu and Kalyan and confessed that he and Babulal had killed the deceased with an axe. There was no witness in this episode, who saw the incident taking place. But on the basis of the circumstantial evidence and the evidence presented in the court and the arguments and evidence presented by the prosecution, the court acquitted the accused Sudama alias Bhayyu Babu alias Babulal Rackwar under Section 302 life imprisonment and giving benefit of doubt to the other three accused. The investigation of the case was done by Deepak Khatri, the then in-charge of the Batiagarh police station. According to the prosecution, one of the accused in the case, Ram Gopal, had given betel nut to the accused to kill him due to old enmity with Achhelal of his own village. Ramgopal did not have money, so he raised money by mortgaging his wife's jewelry and gave betel nut to get Achhelal murdered, but the conspirators were acquitted by giving benefit of doubt and the accused who committed the murder were sentenced to life imprisonment.
