Kolkata. Political activity has intensified in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the removal of loudspeakers from mosques. On Saturday, Murshidabad MP Abu Taher Khan and Jangipur MP Khalilur Rahman met with the Chief Minister at the state secretariat, Nabanna. Both MPs expressed concern over the removal of loudspeakers from mosques and demanded the government stop it.

After meeting the Chief Minister, Abu Taher Khan alleged that Muslims are being targeted in the state. He said that the removal of loudspeakers from mosques is extremely unfortunate and the government should intervene in this matter. Khan also demanded that religious activities be allowed during prayers.

"The court's order is respected, but action needs to be reconsidered."

Jangipur MP Khalilur Rahman said that while court orders should be followed, removing loudspeakers from mosques in the name of this is not appropriate. He stated that the entire matter has been brought to the attention of the Chief Minister and the government has been requested to seriously consider it.

Abu Tahir Khan, who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Murshidabad for the second consecutive time on a Trinamool Congress ticket, also questioned the state police. He alleged that the police are being overly active in removing loudspeakers from mosques. According to Khan, he has appealed to the Chief Minister to immediately stop such action.

The issue of pending SIR cases also arose

In the meeting with the Chief Minister, both MPs also raised the issue of cases related to Special Intensive Review (SIR). The MPs stated that a large number of cases are pending before the relevant tribunals in Muslim-majority Murshidabad.

According to Abu Tahir Khan, many genuine voters have been removed from the electoral rolls and are awaiting the tribunal's decision on their cases. He claimed that due to the pending cases, people are facing difficulties in passport verification, land registration, and availing benefits of government welfare schemes.

The MPs have demanded that the state government expedite the hearing of these cases and complete the process by December 31.

The issue has also been raised with Amit Shah

The Murshidabad MPs have previously raised the issue of removing loudspeakers from mosques with the central government. On Thursday, Abu Tahir Khan, Khalilur Rahman, and Murshidabad MP Yusuf Pathan met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. The issue of removing loudspeakers from mosques in West Bengal was also raised during this meeting.

MLA Naushad Siddiqui has also been vocal on this issue. Now, the MPs have raised the issue with both the state government and the central government, demanding a stay on the proceedings. They have also prominently demanded the speedy resolution of pending SIR cases and the completion of the process by December 31st.
