New Delhi. Air India on Wednesday announced the appointment of Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD). He will replace Campbell Wilson. The company stated that this leadership change represents a significant step in the ongoing transformation of Air India to become a world-class global airline. To select the new CEO, Air India's Board of Directors conducted a comprehensive global search process, overseen by a special committee, which evaluated several experienced candidates from across the aviation sector. The Board sought a person with successful experience in driving significant airline operational reforms, strengthening safety standards, enhancing customer experience, and profitable expansion. Tewolde Gebremariam was unanimously selected for the role. Tewolde is considered one of the most successful airline leaders in the global aviation industry. He served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group for over a decade, where under his leadership the company expanded significantly, transforming it from a regional airline to one of Africa's largest, most profitable, and prestigious airline groups. During his tenure, the company's revenue increased more than fourfold, while its fleet nearly tripled. According to Air India, Gebremariam has extensive experience in managing complex aviation operations, organizational transformation, developing global hubs, strengthening maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, and aviation training systems. As the company moves beyond the initial phase of restructuring and embarks on rapid growth and expansion, his experience is considered crucial. Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated that under Campbell Wilson's leadership, the airline has successfully completed key phases such as stabilization, consolidation, and the procurement of new aircraft. As the company enters its next phase of growth and improved performance, Tewolde's expertise will help Air India establish a strong global presence. Upon his appointment, Tewolde Gebremariam said he was honored to lead a historic brand like Air India. He added that the opportunity to build a modern, world-class airline aligned with India's rapidly growing economy was unique. He expressed confidence that, together with his employees, board of directors, and partners, he would strive to elevate operational quality, Indian hospitality, and long-term growth to new heights.
