Student suicide cases exceed 100
Institutes like IITs, IIMs and NITs account for the maximum number of cases
New Delhi. A total of 103 cases of student suicides have been reported in IITs, IIMs, NITs, AIIMS and central universities from 2018 to 2023, the government told the Lok Sabha on Monday. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan gave this information in written reply to the question of Benny Behanan and Rajmohan Unnithan in the Lok Sabha. As per the data tabled by Pradhan in the lower house in reply, 35 student suicides have been reported in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) from 2018 to 2023.
As per the data, 4 students in Indian Institute of Management (IIM), 24 students in National Institute of Technology (NIT), 11 students in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and 29 students in Central Universities have reported suicides during this period. .
The minister informed that the government pays utmost attention to each and every incident of suicide in the campuses of educational institutions and several initiatives have been taken in this regard. The Education Minister said that no statistics of suicides in state universities are maintained at the central level.
The minister pointed out that according to the National Crime Records Bureau Report 2021 (which includes data for 2017-2021) of accidental deaths and suicides in India, the number of students who committed suicide stood at 13,089, of which 7,396 were boys and 5,693 were girls.
