Sleeper Bus Crosses Divider, Collides with Car in Unnao
5 Dead, 12 Injured; Driver Suspected to Have Fallen Asleep
A severe road accident occurred early Tuesday morning on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. Five people, including two young girls traveling in the car, lost their lives, and 12 others were injured in the accident, which took place within the Bangarmau police station area. Upon receiving the information, police and administrative teams rushed to the scene and initiated relief and rescue operations.
According to reports, the accident occurred around 4:00 AM at kilometer marker 230.800 of the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. A sleeper bus bearing a Bihar registration number was traveling from Haryana to Bihar. The bus lost control, crossed the divider into the opposite lane, and collided with an Ertiga car traveling from Gorakhpur to Mathura. The impact was so severe that the bus plunged into a ditch about 12 feet deep and overturned, causing panic and screams among the passengers.
Five of the nine occupants of the car died on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Divya (13), Amrita (5), Anju (40), Dhunmun (60), and the driver, Vinod (45). All the deceased were reportedly residents of Sant Kabir Nagar district and were en route to Mathura.
Upon being informed of the incident, the Bangarmau police arrived at the scene and, with the help of locals, rescued the injured and transported them to the Community Health Center in Bangarmau. After receiving first aid, those with serious injuries were referred to the district hospital. In addition to the four car occupants, several passengers traveling on the bus were also injured in the accident.
Given the gravity of the incident, District Magistrate Ghanshyam Meena and Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash Singh also visited the accident site. Both officials inspected the relief and rescue operations and instructed the health department to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. Poonam Devi, a passenger on the bus, recounted that she was asleep when the vehicle suddenly began to shake violently. She alerted her family members, but shortly thereafter, the bus overturned. Preliminary suspicions suggest the accident occurred because the driver fell asleep at the wheel; however, the police are investigating the matter by considering all aspects.
Dr. Sunil Rathore, a physician at the Community Health Centre in Bangarmau, stated that a total of 17 people were brought to the hospital following the accident. Of these, five were declared dead, five critically injured patients were referred to the district hospital, and seven others received primary medical treatment.
