Significant progress in AI-171 crash probe
in-depth scrutiny of all technical and human aspects underway: AAIB
New Delhi, The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is investigating the severe crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, has reported significant progress in the probe. The Bureau stated that notable success has been achieved in analyzing the aircraft's technical systems, data from flight recorders, engine-related components, and other crucial evidence.
In an interim statement issued on Friday, the AAIB noted that over the past year, the investigation team has conducted a comprehensive and in-depth examination of all technical, operational, organizational, and human aspects related to the accident. The process involved collaboration with accredited representatives from various national and international bodies, technical advisors, and subject-matter experts.
Meticulous examination of technical evidence
According to the Bureau, a detailed examination has been carried out on the aircraft's technical systems, flight data recorder, engine components, maintenance records, operational documents, and other vital evidence. A holistic analysis of the gathered evidence and the results of various technical tests is currently ongoing.
The AAIB clarified that additional technical evaluations and expert-level investigations would be conducted wherever necessary to ensure that the final conclusions are based entirely on scientific analysis and verified evidence.
The accident claimed 260 lives
It is noteworthy that Air India flight AI-171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The accident, involving a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, resulted in the deaths of 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground. This is considered one of the most severe accidents in the country's recent aviation history. Committed to an Impartial and Evidence-Based Investigation
The AAIB reiterated its firm commitment to conducting an impartial, independent, objective, and evidence-based investigation. The final investigation report will be released once all necessary procedures are completed and the review and consultation processes mandated under Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have been concluded.
Expressing deep condolences to the families of the passengers, crew members, and others who lost their lives in the tragedy, the Bureau stated that it acknowledges the pain and loss experienced by all those affected by the accident.
Investigation Not Aimed at Assigning Liability
The AAIB clarified that the investigation is being conducted in accordance with the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017, and the international standards and guidelines set out in ICAO Annex 13. A preliminary report on the accident was released on July 12, 2025.
The Bureau stated that the fundamental objective of any aircraft accident investigation is not to assign blame or determine legal liability, but rather to understand the causes of the accident in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future and to further strengthen aviation safety.
Appeal to Avoid Speculation
The AAIB has appealed to the media and the general public to refrain from speculation or drawing hasty conclusions before the investigation process is complete. The Bureau assured that every aspect of the accident is being investigated with seriousness and impartiality, ensuring that the final report and safety recommendations can play an effective role in bolstering confidence in the aviation sector and strengthening civil aviation safety.
