Rajasthan's 'princely states' took Dhoni's warriors to task
CSK's second consecutive defeat, RR opens its account of victory
Guwahati: After Nitish Rana (81), Wanindu Hasaranga (4 wickets) and Sandeep Sharma's brilliant bowling in the last over helped Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by six runs in the 11th match of IPL 2025 to register their first win of the season.
Rajasthan batted first and scored 182 runs for 9 wickets and then restricted Chennai to 176 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. This is Rajasthan's first win in three matches, while Chennai has suffered its second consecutive defeat in three matches.
Chennai had to score 39 runs in the last 2 overs to win. But Tushar Deshpande conceded 19 runs in the 19th over and Chennai came back in the match. CSK now needed 20 runs in the last over to win the match and the two biggest explosive batsmen MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja were at the crease.
But Sandeep Sharma gave Rajasthan a huge success by dismissing Dhoni on the very first ball of the 20th over. From here, Sandeep put the match in Rajasthan's bag.
For Chennai, captain Rituraj Gaikwad scored 63, Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 32, Rahul Tripathi scored 23 and Shivam Dubey scored 18 runs. Apart from Hasranga's four wickets for Rajasthan, Jofra Archer and Sandeep Sharma took one wicket each.
Earlier, Nitish Rana scored 81 runs in 36 balls but the Chennai Super Kings bowlers made a brilliant comeback and scored 182 runs for nine wickets to Rajasthan Royals in the IPL match on Sunday. Nitish, who came at number three, put pressure on the Chennai bowlers and hit 10 fours and five sixes in his innings. Earlier, Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and decided to bowl.
Playing on his home ground, Royals captain Riyan Parag (37) hit two fours and two sixes but his innings lacked rhythm. Royals could score only 37 runs in the last five overs. But the good thing for the Royals is that since 2019, Chennai team has failed to chase a target above 180.
In the middle overs for Chennai, Afghanistan's left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmed took two wickets for 28 runs. At the same time, Sri Lanka's Mathisha Pathirana bowled economically in the death overs and took two wickets for 28 runs. Khaleel Ahmed took two wickets for 38 runs.
The Royals did not have a good start and after hitting a four on the first ball, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed by Khaleel. After this, Nitish and Sanju Samson (20) shared a 42-run partnership of 82 runs. Nitish played many shots like flick, pool, slog sweep. He completed his first fifty in just 21 balls. Royals scored 79 runs for one wicket in the powerplay, which is their third highest score in IPL history.
Chennai bowler Jamie Overton, playing in place of Sam Curran, conceded 30 runs in the first two overs. At the same time, 15 runs were scored in Khalil's last over before the powerplay. Ashwin conceded 19 runs in his first over.
Noor broke this partnership by getting Samson caught by Rachin Ravindra at long off. Meanwhile, Nitish's aggressive performance continued, who hit a six to Mahish Pathirana and then hit a six and a four to Ashwin. Ashwin deceived Nitish and forced him to move forward and Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the wicket stumped him smartly and sent him to the pavilion.
Noor then dismissed Dhruv Jurel while Ravindra Jadeja sent Wanindu Hasaranga (four). Riyan Parag hit a four and a six off Noor in the 17th over but lost his wicket in Pathirana's over. Shimron Hetmyer hit a six and a four to take the Royals past 175.
