Ottawa: A Delta Airlines plane crashed while landing at Toronto's Pearson Airport on Monday, injuring 18 people. According to a report by news agency AP, the plane slipped and overturned while landing. The airport administration said on X that an incident occurred with a Delta flight coming from Minneapolis, which had 76 passengers and 4 crew members on board. The accident occurred at around 2:15 pm local time. During this time, flights were halted for about two and a half hours.

The plane slipped and turned upside down

After the accident, some videos have emerged from the scene, showing the Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR aircraft lying upside down on an icy surface, while emergency workers are washing it with water. The plane was somewhat hidden due to snow from the winter storm in Toronto. The airport administration said emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew members have been located.

No one died in the accident
According to officials, although the plane overturned on the runway, no one was killed in the incident. It is too early to say what caused the plane to overturn, but the weather may have played a role in it. According to the Meteorological Service of Canada, it was snowing at the airport and winds were blowing at a speed of 52 kilometers per hour to 65 kilometers per hour. The temperature was around minus 8.6 degrees Celsius.

Deborah Flint, President and CEO of Toronto Pearson International Airport, credited the first response team and other trained personnel at the airport for no deaths after the plane crash on the runway on Monday afternoon. Flint said during the press conference, first and foremost, no lives were lost and that goes to our heroic and trained professionals, our first response team at the airport.

Passengers were hanging upside down like bats

CNN quoted Kokov, a passenger on the crashed plane, as saying that he had no idea what was happening until the plane hit the ground. Kokov said, "We hit the ground and fell on the side. Then we hung upside down like bats." Kokov said he unbuckled his seat belt and fell to the ground and then got out of the plane, but some others needed help getting down from their seats.

The last major accident at Pearson Airport was on August 2, 2005, when an Airbus A340 landing from Paris slid off the runway and caught fire amid stormy weather. All 309 passengers and crew members aboard Air France Flight 358 survived the accident.
