Peaceful Polling at 1.19 Lakh Booths in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu
Election Commission Rules Out Re-polling
New Delhi: Following the polling held on April 23 in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission has clarified that no re-polling was required at any polling booth. According to the Commission, no recommendations for re-polling were received from any of the 119,440 polling stations across both states.
According to the Election Commission, the first phase of polling in West Bengal concluded peacefully across 44,376 polling stations. Votes were cast for a total of 152 seats in the state, where a record voter turnout of approximately 92 percent was recorded.
West Bengal has long been in the spotlight for electoral violence and a tense atmosphere. However, this time, extensive security arrangements were put in place. A large number of central and state security forces were deployed, enabling voters to reach the polling stations without fear. Thanks to these strict security measures, no re-polling was deemed necessary at any booth, and the voter turnout percentage even broke previous records.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu as well, voters participated in the democratic process with great enthusiasm. Peaceful polling took place across the state's 75,064 polling stations, and according to the Election Commission, a total voter turnout of 85.15 percent was recorded.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his delight over the record voter turnout. Writing on the social media platform 'X', he noted that instead of thinking, "This is just a single vote," people cast their votes with the sentiment that "this decides the future of an entire generation." Appreciating the responsible citizens, he stated that the elections in Tamil Nadu concluded peacefully—as is customary—and no reports of any major untoward incidents were received from anywhere in the state.
The Chief Minister remarked that by turning out in large numbers to vote, the state's electorate has fulfilled its responsibility toward safeguarding democracy. Expressing his confidence, he said, "Polling has concluded in Tamil Nadu; now, on May 4th, Tamil Nadu will register a victory. Let us all come together and be a part of this triumph."
