Orders for judicial inquiry into Tirupati temple stampede
Retired High Court judge given the responsibility
The Andhra Pradesh government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the stampede at the Tirupati temple. The state government has handed over the responsibility of the investigation to Justice M Satyanarayana Murthy, a retired judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
On January 8, a stampede broke out in Tirupati's Padmavati Park while waiting for tokens to be given for darshan at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple, in which 8 devotees died and many were injured. TTD Chairman BR Naidu had initially said that when the gate was opened to help a woman who was feeling unwell, the crowd moved forward together and chaos ensued. A stampede broke out late in the evening due to lack of adequate arrangements to control the crowd.
On January 8, when the stampede broke out near the Baikunth Dwar Darshan ticket distribution center in Tirupati, about 4 thousand devotees were standing in line. 8 people died after a stampede at the ticket counter. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and former CM Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed grief over this incident. Later, the Andhra Pradesh government announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of the devotees who died in the stampede. Apart from this, the Chief Minister has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the injured.
