Online gaming will change from May 1st! Central government implements new rules
Tightening its grip on e-sports
The central government has taken a major step towards India's rapidly growing online gaming sector. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has notified long-awaited regulations, establishing a clear framework for online gaming. These new rules will come into effect on May 1st and will impact the way the gaming industry operates in the country.
These rules are designed to implement the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act. They also pave the way for the establishment of an Online Gaming Authority, which will oversee the sector. The authority's primary objective will be to ensure transparency, security, and accountability on gaming platforms.
The most important aspect of these rules is that the government has adopted a "light regulation" approach. This means that most online games that are not real-money games will not require mandatory registration. This means that regular gaming platforms will be able to operate without significant government interference. However, the already strict restrictions on real-money games will remain in place. The government has clarified that games that involve monetary transactions will not be permitted. This is an attempt to protect users from financial risks.
E-sports will receive a boost
The government has adopted a different approach regarding e-sports. According to the new rules, registration will be mandatory for e-sports games. The aim is to organize and bring transparency to this rapidly growing sector. There are also plans to promote e-sports as a professional sport. The government has also clarified that every game will not be required to be classified. This means that developers will not need to apply to determine whether their game is a 'social game' or a 'money game', but this process can be initiated under certain circumstances.
The first scenario would occur when the Gaming Authority itself initiates an investigation into a game. The second scenario relates to e-sports, where registration is required. In the third scenario, the central government can notify games under a specific category, although no such category has been defined at this time. These rules also focus on user safety. Gaming platforms will now be required to incorporate features that ensure user safety. This includes aspects such as data privacy, fraud prevention, and promoting responsible gaming.
