Amid the increasing cases of fake registration of marriages in the country, the Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has taken a big decision on Friday evening. There has been a big change in the rules of marriage registration in UP. The administration issued new guidelines, which have come into effect from Saturday i.e. 7 June 2025. Now the registration of marriage will not be done on the basis of the wedding venue, but in the sub-registrar office of the tehsil where the bride and groom or their parents live. Under the new rule, it is necessary for a family member to be present during the registration of marriage.

Pandit, Maulvi or Pastor is mandatory

If for any reason a family member is unable to come there, then the Pandit, Maulvi or Pastor who conducts the marriage will have to come to the office. The registration will be completed only after their testimony. Not only this, now it has also been made mandatory to submit the video of the wedding in a pen drive. Earlier marriage registration was done on the basis of the wedding venue, due to which cases of fake marriages came to the fore. The government has taken this step to curb this fraud.

Half-baked evidence will not work

AIG Stamp Pushpendra Kumar said that under the new rules, half-baked evidence will no longer work. Strong evidence of marriage and testimony of the Pandit or the concerned religious guru will be mandatory. This change has come after an order of the Allahabad High Court, which was given in the case of Shanidev vs UP Government. The court had clearly said that there should be a strong and verifiable system in marriage registration. The new rules will stop secret marriages and fake registrations, which will maintain the validity and sanctity of the marriage.

Strict instructions to the registrar

According to media reports, strict instructions have been given to the sub-registrar in this regard. Now it will be difficult to marry secretly and get registered without the consent of the family. This step will not only stop fraud, but will also strengthen the marriage legally. If you are thinking of getting marriage registered in UP, then do not forget to follow the new rules.
