Monsoon wreaks havoc in Gujarat, submerging several districts
Five dead so far, heavy rain and flash flood alert issued for the next 48 hours
Surat, As the southwest monsoon activates, Gujarat is witnessing the heaviest rainfall of the season. The worst impact has been felt in the Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Dang, and Bharuch districts of South Gujarat, where continuous torrential rain has severely disrupted normal life. Waterlogging has occurred in many areas of Surat city and surrounding areas. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Surat recorded approximately 104.7 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, while many places recorded even higher rainfall. The continuous rainfall has flooded low-lying areas, disrupted traffic on major roads, and forced people to stay indoors in many areas. In other districts of the state, heavy to very heavy rainfall has also been recorded in Navsari, Valsad, Dang, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Junagadh, and Porbandar. Rivers are in spate in many parts of Saurashtra and South Gujarat, while flooding in rural areas has increased the risk of damage to Kharif crops. Many villages have lost contact with main roads, forcing local administrations to accelerate relief and rescue operations. Heavy rains have led to incidents such as house collapses, uprooted trees, power outages, and road accidents in various districts of the state. People have been evacuated to safety in many locations, while the administration is continuously monitoring the situation, and relief teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas. Damage assessments are currently underway in various districts. Daily wage laborers, small traders, rickshaw and auto drivers are facing the most hardship. Workers in industrial units, farmers, and schoolchildren are facing significant difficulties. Waterlogging has affected business in markets. Production has slowed in many industrial areas, and public transport has been disrupted. Livestock farmers and farmers in rural areas are facing the challenge of protecting fodder and crops. Many families have also suffered damage to household goods due to water entering their homes. Considering the situation, The state government, district administration, municipal corporations, police, fire departments, and the State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) have been put on alert. Pumps have been installed to drain water from waterlogged areas. People from low-lying areas are being evacuated to safer locations. Control rooms have been activated in sensitive areas, and people have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and streams. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of the risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and flash floods in some areas for the next 24 to 48 hours for several districts in Gujarat. Special vigilance has been advised in several districts, including Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Dang, Amreli, and Bhavnagar. The Meteorological Department estimates that the active phase of the monsoon will continue for a few more days, so people living in low-lying areas and on the riverbanks and fishermen need to exercise extra caution. Overall, the monsoon in Gujarat now appears to be posing more of a challenge than a relief. On one hand, this rain is proving beneficial for reservoirs and dams, while on the other hand, the continuous torrential downpour has disrupted life in many districts. The situation is on high alert and the Meteorological Department has given clear indications that people will need to remain alert in the coming days also.
