On the question of Rajya Sabha member Dr. Bhim Singh, the Civil Aviation Ministry has said that there is a proposal to build airports in ten cities of the state under the UDAN 5.2 scheme. There is a proposal to operate small aircraft at airports in Veerpur, Maharama, Bhagalpur, Munger, Muzaffarpur, Valmikinagar, Motihari, Raxaul, Madhubani and Chapra in Bihar.

Bids have been received for these cities. In response to the unstarred question asked by Dr. Singh in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the departmental minister said that bids have been received for aircraft with less than 20 seats at these airports. The Bihar government has been requested to provide consent and confirmation regarding the availability of land for the development of these airports.

Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol has said that Darbhanga airport was identified for development in the second phase of the bidding process under the 'Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik Yojana'. Under the "Udaan" scheme, the airport has been made operational on 8 November 2020.

Other facilities including passenger terminal building will be developed

A blueprint for the construction of 10 airports in Bihar has been prepared. Under this, other facilities including passenger terminal building will be developed.

Earlier, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India had sent a letter to the Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar and informed about this.

The Joint Secretary of the Ministry had requested to give an updated report related to the land of the airport, so that the airport could be developed for the flight of small aircraft (TwoB and ThreeC category).

A report related to the availability of free land was sought in this regard. It was said that the airports should be free from all kinds of burdens regarding upgradation and development, which includes security, fire services, metrological services and responsibility of operation and management.

Currently operations are being carried out at these three airports in Bihar

Gaya Airport: It is the only international airport in Bihar, located in Gaya city. This airport is near the world heritage site Bodh Gaya.

Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport: It is located in Patna and is a major domestic airport of Bihar.

Darbhanga Airport: It is located in Darbhanga and is a domestic airport. People of Mithila region get facilities from here.
