Muzaffarpur Hospital Fire
3 Dead, Over 20 Patients Burned After Fire Breaks Out in ICU
A massive fire that broke out early Thursday morning in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has shaken the entire nation. The incident occurred at Prasad Hospital, a private facility in the city's Brahmpura area, where a sudden fire in the ICU triggered chaos. The flames spread so rapidly that patients, their families, and hospital staff had no time to react.
Preliminary reports confirm at least three deaths, while more than 20 patients have suffered burns or injuries. With several patients reported to be in critical condition, there are fears that the death toll could rise.
The incident took place between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM, a time when 13 to 15 patients were admitted to the ICU. Smoke suddenly began to fill the room, and within minutes, the entire ICU was engulfed in flames and toxic smoke. Family members, locals, and rescue teams had to break down windows and doors to evacuate the patients; many were carried out using stretchers and bedsheets. Initial investigations suggest a short circuit as the likely cause, though some officials speculate that a technical malfunction involving electrical equipment or the oxygen support system in the ICU might have sparked the fire. However, the administration has clarified that the exact cause will only be determined after forensic and technical investigations are complete. Several fire tenders arrived at the scene, and the blaze was brought under control after hours of effort. Officials from the district administration, police, and health department, along with senior officers, arrived at the site to oversee relief and rescue operations. Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen has ordered an inquiry into the matter; the administration is investigating whether fire safety norms were being followed and if there was any negligence. The Bihar government has also treated the incident with great seriousness, announcing an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the families of each deceased victim and issuing instructions to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured. This incident has occurred just a day after a massive fire in Delhi raised questions about safety arrangements. Such recurring incidents indicate serious lapses in the observance of fire safety regulations in hospitals, hotels, and other public buildings. The Muzaffarpur tragedy has once again raised the question of whether safety standards in sensitive institutions are merely being met on paper or are actually being implemented.
