Mumbai cricket legend Padak Shivalkar passes away
He took 589 wickets in 124 first class matches
He was one of the finest players of his time. Shivalkar was unlucky not to be selected in the Indian Test team.
Born on 14 September 1940, Shivalkar was a left-arm spinner who served Mumbai cricket in a career spanning two decades.
The MCA said in a condolence message on Monday, "Mumbai cricket has lost a true legend today. Padmakar Shivalkar sir's contribution to the game, especially as one of the finest spinners of all time, will always be remembered. His dedication, skill and impact on Mumbai cricket are unparalleled. His demise is an irreparable loss to the cricket world. May his soul rest in peace." The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also expressed deep grief over the demise of former Ranji Trophy star and Mumbai cricket legend Padmakar Shivalkar.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, BCCI said, "The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deeply condoles the unfortunate demise of Padmakar Shivalkar, who passed away on March 3, 2025. The legendary left-arm spinner was a legend of Indian domestic cricket, renowned for his unparalleled skill and dedication to the game."
Paying tribute to the late spinner, BCCI President Roger Binny said, "Indian cricket has lost a true legend today. Padmakar Shivalkar's mastery over left-arm spin and his deep understanding of the game made him a respected figure in domestic cricket. His extraordinary career and selfless contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket will always be remembered."
Secretary Devajit Saikia said, "Shivlakar Sir was an inspiration to several generations of cricketers. His consistency, skill and longevity in the game were truly remarkable. Even though he may not have played for India, his impact on Indian cricket, especially in Mumbai, is undeniable."
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde condoled his death on Twitter and wrote, "The news of the demise of former Mumbai cricketer Padmakar Shivalkar is extremely sad. With his left-arm orthodox bowling, he had sent many great batsmen to the pavilion. With his demise, the cricket world has lost a star. May God give peace to his soul and give strength to his family and fans to overcome this grief."
Former Karnataka and India fast bowler Dodda Ganesh also paid tribute to the legendary cricketer.
Ganesh said, "Padmakar Shivalkar sir was definitely one of the greatest cricketers who should have played for India. Nevertheless, he is still a legend of the game. His contribution to the game of cricket is immense."
Famous as Paddy Sir in Mumbai cricket, Shivalkar played 124 first-class matches before retiring at the age of 50, in which he took 569 wickets at an average of 19.69. He took five wickets 43 times and 10 wickets in a match on 13 occasions with a best bowling performance of 8-16 against Tamil Nadu in the 1972–73 Ranji Trophy season.
