Meira Kumar sits on Nehru's historic chair
The India Coalition launched a symbolic "people's impeachment" against Gyanesh Kumar.
New Delhi, On Saturday in New Delhi, the opposition INDIA alliance organized a symbolic 'people's impeachment' against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over this event. A special thing about the event was that the chair on which Meira Kumar conducted the entire proceedings was said to be that of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Congress's media and publicity department chief Pawan Khera shared this information on the social media platform X. During this, the opposition leaders raised questions on the functioning of the Election Commission and demanded the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner from his post and action against him.
Sitting on Nehru's chair, Meira Kumar handled the proceedings.
Congress leader Pawan Khera stated on X that the chair on which Meira Kumar presided over the symbolic impeachment proceedings against the Chief Election Commissioner was used by Jawaharlal Nehru during his tenure as Prime Minister. He described this chair as witness to many important decisions in the country's history. According to Khera, sitting on this very chair, Meira Kumar declared Gyanesh Kumar unfit to hold the post of Chief Election Commissioner. He claimed that the people of the country have also not accepted the Chief Election Commissioner and it is now time for him to step down.
Kharge proposed the proposal, which Rahul Gandhi called a political weapon.
This event of the INDIA alliance was held on the lawn of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence at 10, Rajaji Marg. It was attended by MPs, leaders of opposition parties, and people associated with civil society. The event was organized on the lines of Parliament proceedings, in which a resolution was introduced and passed against Gyanesh Kumar. While introducing the resolution, Congress President Kharge alleged that the voting rights of citizens in the country are under threat. He accused the Election Commission of working at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, calling this action a political weapon, said that it is against those who have conspired to eliminate the votes of Indian citizens.
Allegations of influencing elections by cutting votes, demand for treason case
During the event, opposition parties accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of influencing election results by deleting votes from voter lists. INDIA Alliance leaders also demanded that he be charged with treason and sent to jail. The opposition raised serious questions about the Election Commission's role and functioning. However, this entire exercise was not a true impeachment proceeding through the constitutional process set out in Parliament, but rather a symbolic public event organized by the opposition alliance.
