Attempts to burn houses of BJP leadersImphal: Amidst the unrest in Manipur, another incident of violence has come to the fore. A huge crowd and security forces clashed overnight in Imphal. Two civilians have been injured in this incident. According to the report of the news agency PTI, the mob also tried to set fire to the houses of BJP leaders. Firing was reported throughout the night from Kwakta in Manipur's Bishnupur district and Kangwai in Churachandpur district. An attempt was also made to loot weapons from Iringbam police station in Imphal West. However, no weapon could be stolen.

The Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force conducted a joint march till midnight in the state capital to prevent rioters from gathering. Officials said that 'a crowd of about 1,000 people came together to try to burn down the buildings near the palace complex. The RAF fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. The mob tried to set fire to the house of MLA Biswajeet. However, the RAF managed to disperse the crowd.

After midnight, another mob surrounded the BJP office in Sinjemai, but could not cause any damage as the army managed to control the crowd here too. Similarly, a mob tried to ransack the house of BJP (women's wing) president Sharda Devi near Porampet in Imphal during the night. The security forces chased away the youths. Earlier in the day, the mob had blocked roads in the heart of Imphal city on Friday and torched properties, officials said.

Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh's house was also attacked and an attempt was made to burn it down on Thursday night. A godown near the royal palace of a retired tribal IAS officer was completely gutted on Friday. The mob clashed with the RAF personnel on Friday evening after setting the godown on fire. Officials said the group also burnt tyres, logs and garbage in the middle of the roads in Wangkhei, Porompat and Thangapat areas, affecting traffic in Manipur's capital city.
