Major Blow to Naxalism in Jharkhand
Maoist leader Misir Besra, carrying a bounty of Rs 1 crore, arrested; 16 militants surrender
Security agencies have achieved a major success in the anti-Naxal operations in Jharkhand. Senior CPI (Maoist) leader Misir Besra, considered one of the country's most wanted Maoist leaders, was arrested during a joint operation. He carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore and had been eluding security agencies for a long time. Four other Maoists were also arrested along with him during the operation. According to officials, this operation is considered one of the most significant achievements in the ongoing campaign against Naxalism in the state.
According to sources, based on intelligence, Jharkhand Police and central security forces conducted a joint operation in Dhanbad district, in which Misir Besra was arrested. The identities of the four other Maoists arrested with him have not been released. Officials say that detailed information related to the case will be shared after preliminary interrogation.
Misir Besra had long been active within the top leadership of the Maoist organization. He is reported to have over 150 criminal cases registered against him in Jharkhand, Odisha, and other states, including attacks on security forces, arms smuggling, extortion, and Naxalite activities. He evaded security agencies for years and played a key role in the organization's operations.
Security agencies believe his arrest will deal a major blow to the Maoist network. Investigating officers hope his interrogation will yield crucial information regarding active cadres, arms supply, funding networks, hideouts, and future strategies, enabling effective action against the Naxalite network operating in Jharkhand and surrounding states.
During this operation, security forces achieved another major success when 16 Maoists surrendered to the police. These include several active leaders at the regional, zonal, and sub-zonal levels, including five female cadres. Many of the surrendered militants had bounties of lakhs of rupees on their heads.
At the time of their surrender, these Maoists handed over to the police several modern weapons, including INSAS rifles and AK-47s, and a large quantity of ammunition. Police officials say that the impact of the government's rehabilitation policy and ongoing anti-Naxal operations is now clearly visible, with many militants abandoning the path of violence and returning to the mainstream.
Anti-Naxal operations in Jharkhand have been steadily intensified this year. Security forces have arrested a large number of Maoists in several successful operations, while many militants have also surrendered. Officials believe that the continued crackdown on top Maoist leadership is weakening the organization's grip, and Naxalite activities in the state may see a further decline in the future.
