New Delhi, India is now going to get a new weapon to protect its maritime borders. The US has approved the sale of High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare (HAASW) sonobuoys to India. According to ET's report, the deal will be worth $52.8 million (about Rs. 443 crores). Sonobuoys are airborne sensors that broadcast underwater sounds and help destroy submarines.

India will mainly use them through MH-60R helicopters. These helicopters have been purchased by the Indian Navy some time ago. India has already received 6 of these helicopters. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency says that India will not have any problem in incorporating sonobuoys into its existing defense system. Now the US Congress has to consider it for which they have 30 days.

The deal was done during Rajnath Singh's visit

During the US visit of the country's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, the Foreign Minister Antony Blinken approved this deal. This deal is expected to further strengthen the defense relations between India and the US. This deal also becomes important because China is continuously increasing its strength in the Indian Ocean.

3 types of sonobios

India has demanded AN/SSQ-53G, AN/SSQ-62F, and AN/SSQ-36 sonobuoys. There is some difference in the features of these three.

AN/SSQ-53G detects the sounds inside the sea without any movement. Therefore it is difficult to catch it. It can be launched from a height of 9144 meters and it works up to 300 meters inside.

The AN/SSQ-62F is known for its directional, coherent, active sonar system. It releases sound waves and detects submarines underwater.

The AN/SSQ-36 provides water temperature data. This helps other sonar systems to increase their accuracy. It can detect the speed of sound in water.
