Indian-origin Kash Patel becomes FBI director
Patel said this as soon as he took charge
US: The FBI, part of the United States Department of Justice, has got its new director. Donald Trump's loyalist Kash Patel has been made the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after getting approval from the Senate. This is the first time that a person of Indian origin has got the command of the FBI. After the approval of the Senate, Patel expressed gratitude and vowed to make the agency "transparent, accountable and committed to justice".
Thanking Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi, he said that he is committed to restoring public confidence in the FBI.
Kash Patel posted on X, "I am honored to be confirmed as the ninth director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Thank you President Trump and Attorney General Bondi for your unwavering trust and support."
He further said, "The FBI has a long legacy - from "G-men" to protecting our country in the wake of 9/11. The American people deserve an FBI that is transparent, accountable and committed to justice. The politicization of our justice system has eroded public trust - but that ends today."
Patel vowed to rebuild the FBI as an organisation that the American people can be proud of.
Patel said, "Working with the dedicated men and women of the Bureau and our partners, we will rebuild an FBI that the American people can be proud of. And to those who seek to do Americans harm - consider this your warning. We will pursue them to every corner of this planet. Mission first. America always. Let's get to work."
Significantly, despite opposition from Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, Kash Patel secured support from the rest of the Republican Party, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had previously opposed other Trump nominees.
His confirmation was approved by a narrow margin of 51–49 votes, as all Senate Democrats voted against him.
