India won the Champions Trophy for a record third time
Defunct New Zealand in the final
Dubai. After the magic of spinners, India won the Champions Trophy title for the third time thanks to the strength of captain Rohit Sharma (76) and other Indian batsmen. With this, Team India avenged the title loss of 2000 from New Zealand, when Stephen Fleming's team defeated the team captained by Sourav Ganguly and shattered their dream of winning the title for the first time. Today, Rohit's team did not make any such mistake in this breath-taking match and made India the champion.
India was the joint champion of this title with Sri Lanka in 2002 and later in 2013 it won this title under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
In the match played on Sunday, New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first. New Zealand presented a challenge of 252 runs to Team India. The Kiwi team put up this challenging score thanks to Daryl Mitchell (63) and all-rounder Michael Bracewell's unbeaten (53*). Earlier, they were eyeing a big total here, when they had scored 69 runs after losing 1 wicket in the first 10 overs. Rachin Ravindra (37) had just started to take on the Indian bowlers when Kuldeep Yadav surprised Rachin with a googly and bowled him out on his very first ball in this match. In the very next over, Kuldeep put pressure on New Zealand by getting Kane Williamson (11) caught and bowled on his own ball.
After this, the Indian spinners slowed down the run rate of the Kiwi team. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips (34) shared a 57-run partnership for the 5th wicket. But Varun broke this partnership by bowling them out. Daryl Mitchell was dismissed by Shami in the last overs. Michael Bracewell played a quick unbeaten innings of 53 runs in 40 balls and presented a challenge of 252 runs to India on the spin friendly pitch of Dubai.
In response, the century opening partnership of Rohit Sharma (76) and Shubman Gill (31) disappointed the Kiwi team. Both batsmen added 105 runs for the first wicket. At this score, Gill was out on a surprising catch by Glenn Phillips on the ball of captain Santner. Virat Kohli became the victim of Bracewell's very first ball in the match. Shortly after this, when Rohit also got out, pressure increased on India.
However, Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29) worked to bring India's innings back on track by making an important partnership of 61 runs for the fourth wicket. But Axar became Santner's second victim by playing a bad shot on fine leg. After some time, Axar Patel also became Bracewell's second victim. But reliable KL Rahul kept the Indian hopes alive at one end and along with Hardik Pandya (18) and Ravindra Jadeja, he ensured victory for India.
