Damoh: An incident involving the discovery of old silver coins during excavation work for house construction has come to light in Futera Ward No. 3 of Damoh city. The incident created a sensation throughout the entire area, and within no time, the matter reached the attention of both the police and the administration.
According to reports, construction work was underway at an ancestral property in the Futera area. Laborers were digging to lay the foundation for pillars when an old metal vessel became visible beneath the ground. The laborers claim that the vessel contained a large number of old silver coins along with some other metal objects.
It is alleged that following the discovery of the coins, a dispute arose between the laborers and the homeowner regarding the sharing of the find. The laborers allege that the homeowner took possession of the excavated items and instructed them to keep the discovery a secret. As the dispute escalated, the laborers reported the entire matter to the police.
Upon receiving the information, teams from the Police, the Revenue Department, and the Archaeology Department arrived at the scene and inspected the site. Officials questioned the individuals involved and took several of the old silver coins into their custody to initiate an investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the recovered coins bear symbols and images associated with the British colonial era, leading to speculation regarding their historical significance. However, officials state that the exact number of coins, their historical authenticity, and their market value can only be determined once the investigation is complete.
Meanwhile, the homeowner has dismissed the claims of a massive treasure trove being discovered as exaggerated. He maintains that only a few old coins were found during the excavation, and the matter has garnered unnecessary attention due to rumors.
Currently, the Archaeology Department is examining the coins, and a report has been submitted to senior officials. The combination of history buried beneath the ground and the ongoing dispute above it has piqued curiosity throughout the entire locality. All eyes are now fixed on the administrative inquiry and the final report from the Archaeology Department.
