Heavy rain in Punjab
Order to keep all schools in the state closed till July 13
Chandigarh, All government and private schools have been ordered to be closed due to Torrential Rains in the whole of Punjab for two consecutive days. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed to declare holidays till July 13 in all government/aided/recognised and private schools in the state with immediate effect keeping in view the security due to incessant rains in the state. Heavy rains in many parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday led to water-logging in low-lying areas. After which the officials immediately swung into action and started taking action at the most affected places.
Due to torrential rains in many parts of Punjab, the army has been put on alert. Government officials said heavy monsoon rains blocked traffic on major roads in Punjab and Haryana and delayed flights. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said elaborate arrangements have been made to deal with any emergency arising out of the floods. Several teams of NDRF have also been deployed in flood-affected districts, including Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib.
Punjab's Special Director General of Police Arpit Shukla said that army personnel have also been asked to be vigilant in these areas. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed cabinet ministers, deputy commissioners, senior superintendents of police (SSPs) and other concerned officials to go to the affected areas and help people. Mann tweeted in Punjabi that 'Punjab has been receiving heavy rains for the past two days, due to which people living in low-lying areas are facing difficulties, especially those living in areas along the banks of the river.... '
He said that 'I have instructed all my ministers, MLAs, Deputy Commissioners and SSPs of all districts to go among the people.'Punjab Water Resources Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hair said that following the instructions of Mann, the Water Resources Department has made preparations to deal with any unwanted situation arising out of heavy rains. Heyer said that a flood control room has been set up at the headquarter level and staff has been deployed in the area. At the same time, three rivers flowing from Ambala district in Haryana, Markanda, Ghaggar and Tangri are flowing close to the danger mark. Officials said that many people living near Tangri beach near Ambala Cantonment have been asked to move to safer places.
