New Delhi. The southwest monsoon remains active across the country, and due to its influence, heavy rain continued in several states on Thursday, July 9. Delhi-NCR has been experiencing continuous rainfall since morning, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds for Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and several northeastern states. However, the Meteorological Department predicts a gradual decrease in rainfall activity in central India from July 9.

According to the IMD, the total rainfall across the country in July is expected to be around 94 percent of the long-term average (LPA), while temperatures are expected to remain above normal in most regions.

Heavy rain continues in North India

According to the Meteorological Department, widespread rainfall is expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rain was recorded in many areas of Delhi-NCR since morning. Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are forecast throughout the day. The minimum temperature is expected to be between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius.

An alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are also expected at many places in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Alert in Eastern and Northeastern India

In eastern India, the monsoon is fully active in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Heavy rainfall is expected at many places in these states.

Widespread rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura between July 7 and 12. On July 9, a warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and strong winds at many places.

Monsoon impact to continue in Western India

Heavy rains are expected to continue in Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Central Maharashtra, although the intensity may decrease in some areas. Heavy rains are also forecast in Eastern Rajasthan. Continuous monsoon rains are likely to disrupt normal life in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

Rainfall activity to decrease in Central India

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall activity will begin to decrease in most parts of Central India, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, from July 9th. Widespread rain is expected in Western Madhya Pradesh from July 7th to 9th, with the impact likely to weaken thereafter. Heavy rain is still expected in parts of Vidarbha and Eastern Madhya Pradesh.

Kerala and Karnataka will be most affected in South India

Heavy rain alerts have been issued for Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and southern interior Karnataka. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Rainfall is also forecast in Lakshadweep. Chennai will experience partly cloudy skies with light rain possible in some areas, while humidity is expected throughout the day.

Yellow Alert for Delhi-NCR

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR. Intermittent light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected throughout the day. The maximum humidity is expected to reach 90 percent, while the minimum is expected to be 70 percent.

According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature on July 10 is expected to be 35 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be 26 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms are also expected on July 11. Rainfall activity is expected to decrease slightly on July 12 and 13, although the sky will remain cloudy and the temperature may reach 37 degrees Celsius.

Warning for Districts Along the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu

The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall for the next two days in the districts along the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are expected at many locations. The department has advised people to remain vigilant.

Chennai and surrounding areas are expected to remain cloudy for the next two days. While widespread rainfall is unlikely, light showers may occur in some areas. Maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to be 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal, which may increase humidity.

Heavy Rain Warning for Assam for the Next Four Days

The IMD has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Assam for the next three to four days. According to the department, widespread rainfall will continue across the state due to the prevailing monsoon conditions.

The Meteorological Department has warned that continuous rainfall is likely to cause waterlogging in urban areas, flash floods in low-lying areas, disruption of road traffic, and landslides in vulnerable hilly areas. People have been urged to follow official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather.
