Gold worth 7.88 crore rupees stolen in Borivali, Mumbai
Jewelry shop's lock was opened with a duplicate key
A theft worth crores of rupees has caused a stir in the Borivali area of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. Thieves targeted a jewelry shop and made off with approximately 5 kg of gold. Police investigations have revealed the shocking involvement of internal collusion in the crime. Two suspects have been arrested, while a minor has been detained and sent to an observation home. Police are now searching for the absconding suspect.
Theft worth crores creates sensation
This major theft occurred at a jewelry shop named 'My Gold Point' in IC Colony, Borivali West, Mumbai. This area is considered one of Mumbai's prime residential and commercial areas. The incident occurred on the night of January 13th and 14th, 2026. When the shop opened in the morning, the showcases were found empty, and gold worth not lakhs, but crores, was missing. The value of the stolen jewelry is estimated to be around ₹78.8 million (US$1.2 million).
Lock Opened with a Duplicate Key
The investigation revealed that the accused used a duplicate key instead of breaking the shop's lock. This is why, at first glance, no signs of forced entry were found. The accused meticulously collected approximately 5 kg of gold jewelry from the showcase and fled. The incident was so well-planned that no one nearby was even aware of it. This led the police to initially suspect that the case might be linked to insiders.
Suspicion Falls on Employees
Soon after the incident, two shop employees suddenly disappeared, further fueling suspicion. Police reviewed footage from nearby CCTV cameras and intensified the investigation. The investigation revealed that these employees were responsible for closing the shop and handling the keys. This trust was exploited to create a duplicate key and carry out the crime. After confirming internal collusion, the police began searching for the suspects.
Two Accused Arrested
Police have arrested the main accused, Ganpat Chadana (26) and Kishanlal alias Bhairu Bagalal Rebari (21). During interrogation, both made important revelations. Based on their information, 3 kg 100 grams of gold has been recovered so far. The investigation also revealed the involvement of a minor, who has been detained and sent to an observation home. Police say that interrogation is ongoing to recover the remaining gold.
One Accused Absconding
According to police, another accused in this incident is still at large. He is suspected to be in possession of approximately 4 kg of gold. The investigation also revealed that his accomplices provided the absconding accused with vehicle and other resources to help him escape. Police are continuously raiding possible hideouts. Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused through technical surveillance and local networks.
An Atmosphere of Panic Among Traders
Following this major theft, there is an atmosphere of anxiety and panic among jewelry traders in the area. Traders say this incident, which was allegedly orchestrated by internal conspiracy, has raised questions about security. Police have assured them that the absconding accused will be arrested soon. Shopkeepers have been advised to make additional security arrangements. The investigation is currently underway, and recovery efforts have been intensified.
