France Bans Israeli Minister
Mocking Gaza Detainees Proves Costly; Action Taken After Video Goes Viral
Taking a major step against Itamar Ben-Gvir, France has banned his entry into the country. This action follows the emergence of controversial videos and allegations regarding the alleged humiliating treatment of detainees linked to the Gaza Flotilla. Announcing the decision on the social media platform X, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that Ben-Gvir’s conduct was "unimaginable and unacceptable." He emphasized that such behavior toward French and European citizens cannot be tolerated under any circumstances—particularly when perpetrated by an individual holding public office.
Videos at the Heart of the Controversy
Indeed, several videos shared by Ben-Gvir this week have sparked an international controversy. In one video, he was seen waving a large Israeli flag over detained activists. In another, he appeared standing before a detainee, declaring, "Am Yisrael Chai"—meaning "The Nation of Israel Lives."
Yet another video showed several detainees seated on the ground with their heads bowed, surrounded by armed security personnel, while the Israeli national anthem played in the background. Following the release of these videos, human rights organizations and numerous nations issued strong condemnations, characterizing the incidents as a public humiliation of the detainees.
Call for Strict Action from the European Union
France did not limit its response to unilateral action; it has also called upon the European Union to take strict measures against Ben-Gvir. The French Foreign Minister asserted that, in democratic nations, the humiliation of individuals held in custody is wholly unacceptable. However, France also criticized the Gaza Flotilla campaign itself, arguing that such missions do not offer practical solutions but instead serve to exacerbate diplomatic pressure and tensions.
Flotilla Intercepted in International Waters
According to reports, the flotilla—comprising approximately 50 vessels—was intercepted by Israeli forces while operating in international waters. This flotilla was heading toward Gaza and attempting to challenge Israel's naval blockade. Activists aboard the flotilla alleged that they were mistreated while in custody. Some detainees have leveled serious allegations, including physical assault, the use of Tasers, and the deployment of attack dogs.
Poland Has Already Imposed Sanctions
Poland had previously taken action against Itamar Ben-Gvir. It imposed a five-year entry ban on him. Poland's Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, stated that in the democratic world, mocking and humiliating detainees is unacceptable under any circumstances.
