Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala was cremated with full state honours at his native village Teja Kheda in Sirsa on Saturday (December 21). Chautala, a prominent Jat leader and five-time Chief Minister of Haryana, died in Gurugram on Friday at the age of 89.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and many other leaders attended the funeral of Om Prakash Chautala. They also paid tribute to former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala in Teja Kheda village.

Apart from them, many ministers of Haryana, state assembly speaker Harvinder Kalyan, former Union minister Vinod Sharma, SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia, BJP's Manpreet Badal and Manjinder Singh Sirsa and many other leaders also reached Teja Kheda and paid tribute to him. Also, leaders of various political parties paid tribute to the late leader.

Earlier, the body of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Chautala was kept at his family farmhouse in Teja Kheda in Sirsa for the last darshan of the people on Saturday. The body was wrapped in the tricolor.

Om Prakash Chautala's younger son Abhay Singh Chautala (INLD leader) and elder son Ajay Singh Chautala (Jananayak Janata Party chief) and other family members including former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala were present in Teja Kheda. The last rites were performed by priests amid chanting of Vedic mantras.

Congress leaders also joined

Congress leaders Kumari Selja and Randeep Singh Surjewala also reached Chautala's farmhouse in the morning to pay tribute to him. A large number of common people from the village also gathered to attend the funeral.

3 days of state mourning

The Haryana government on Friday declared three days of state mourning. Apart from this, a public holiday has been declared in all offices on Saturday.

Shortly after paying floral tribute, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said, "Yesterday I got the news (of his death). Five days ago I spoke to Chaudhary sahab and he was asking about my health. He was more concerned about me. He said that whenever I got a chance, I got his blessings."

The Vice President said that farmers' issues and development of villages were among Chautala's priorities. He said that Chautala was a vocal and courageous person and was dedicated to the rural system.
