Former Chief Justice Chandrachud is not vacating the government bungalow
SC administration wrote a letter to the central governmenta
The Supreme Court administration, taking an unprecedented step, has written a letter to the central government to get former Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud to vacate his official residence.
According to sources, the court administration has written a letter to the Union Housing Ministry requesting that Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg be immediately taken back to the house pool of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court administration said that this action is being taken because Justice DY Chandrachud has stayed longer than the time prescribed under Rule 3B. Both the requests to retain him have already expired.
CJI Chandrachud retired in November 2024
Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud retired on November 10, 2024. The residence permit granted to CJI Chandrachud expired on May 31, 2025, and the six-month period provided in Rule 3B of the 2022 Rules expired on May 10, 2025. Despite this, he is still living in the bungalow, which the Supreme Court administration considers a violation of the rules.
The administration has made it clear that it is necessary to take immediate possession of the bungalow without any further delay, so that it can be put to functional use by the Supreme Court again.
