New Delhi, Famous Urdu poet Munawwar Rana, who was ill for a long time, died late on Sunday night. The famous poet was already suffering from chronic diseases like kidney disease, diabetes and blood pressure. After his health suddenly deteriorated, he was admitted to a private hospital in Lucknow in the early hours of Thursday. While giving information, his daughter Sumaiya Rana had said that her father was kept on ventilator and his condition is critical. After this, when his condition started worsening, he was admitted to PGI, where he died today. SP chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav paid tribute by tweeting.

Munawwar Rana's daughter Sumaiya had said in a video released at around 3.30 am last Thursday that her father's health has been deteriorating for the last two-three days. During dialysis he had severe stomach pain. Doctors did a CT scan and found some problem in his gall bladder. Then he was operated on. Urdu poet Munawwar Rana was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poem 'Shahdaba'. Munawwar Rana was born on 26 November 1952 in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, but spent most of his life in Kolkata, West Bengal.

His contribution to Urdu literature

71-year-old poet Rana was suffering from chronic illness for the last several months and was undergoing treatment at PGI Hospital in Lucknow. Rana was widely recognized for his contributions to Urdu literature and poetry, especially his ghazals. His poetic style was notable for its simplicity. He avoided Persian and Arabic and often included Hindi and Awadhi words, which appealed to Indian audiences. His most famous poem was ‘Maa’, which brought out the qualities of a mother in the traditional ghazal style.

Other awards received by Rana include Amir Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr. Zakir Hussain Award and Saraswati Samaj Award. His works have been translated into many languages. Rana had a big presence in mushairas in India and abroad. His daughter Sumaiya is a member of the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP).
