Why was the by-election held?
By-elections have been held on this seat due to the death of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan. In Tamil Nadu, Congress contested the elections in alliance with DMK and won. Thirumahan Avera became MLA from this seat in 2021, but he died in January 2023. In the by-election held after this, Congress gave ticket to his father and former minister EVKS Elangovan and he won this seat. However, he also died due to illness in December 2024. After this, Congress left this seat and alliance partner DMK fielded its candidate here.
Why did BJP and other opposition parties boycott?
Opposition parties say that the ruling DMK uses money and muscle power to win the by-election. Therefore, he will not contest the elections. Other opposition parties including BJP have said that they will contest the assembly elections to be held in 2026 with full force. The tenure of the candidate who wins from this seat will be till 2026 only. Assembly elections are to be held in Tamil Nadu in 2026.
